Hunting Zambia
With Ralph Marcum
& Roger Barker
In July 2003 Roger Barker and I hunted in Zambia
with Kwalata Safaris and PH Peter Chipman. Hunting in Zambia
was closed in 2001 and 2002 by the government to reallocate
hunting areas. Peter was lucky to get one of the premier
big game areas in Zambia, the Lower Luponde game area.
The hunt area lies in the Luangwa valley in central Zambia
and well known for its large population of cape buffalo
and big cats. We had booked a 16 day safari for leopard,
Cape buffalo and plains game.
The bush camp was located on the Luangwa
River and we watched hippo, crocodiles and elephants from
camp daily. The area had so much game I was able to take
all the game in the area in only 5 days. (Cape buffalo,
large male leopard, hippo, chobe bushbuck, impala, puku,
hyena and waterbuck.)
Roger took 9 days to get his game before we relocated to
another area where we took Kafue lechwe, oribi, tsessebe,
Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and zebra. This was the best hunt
I have been on for quality and quantity of game. We had
so much fun we booked a lion hunt for this year before we
left.
