| Toney
Daly
Toney had the good fortune to hunt with Brian Peterson, master guide,
in Kodiak, Alaska. This was a 10-day backpack hunt in typical Alaskan
weather of fog and rain. The terrain was mountainous and covered with
alders. The brown bear population in the area was very good and Toney
took a 9 foot plus bear. Also collected on the trip was a nice Sitka
Blacktail deer. Toney said this was one of the best run and organized
hunts he had been on, with an excellent guide, good equipment and good
food.
Fran Davitt & Randall Bush
While at the Board of Directors meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in
September 2002, Randall met Fran at a Bar B Q held at the AWLS Ranch.
Fran is on the Board of the Lehigh Valley Chapter in Pennsylvania. Fran
indicated that he was an avid turkey hunter and had always wanted to
hunt wild turkey in Alabama. An invitation was extended and accepted.
The last week of March finds Fran in Alabama at the Cobb’s Crossing
Hunting Club in Sumter County. For the first couple of days Randall
was unable to be off so Fran had the pleasure of hunting with Billy
Moore a master turkey hunter. The gobblers were very quite gobbling
about 3 times in the morning, then shutting up. Fran was so good with
his mouth call that Billy let him do most of the calling, which is very
unusual. The gobblers were not even with the hens yet. Randall finally
arrives and the grocery supply rapidly declines. Having held the distinction
of being the biggest eater at the club for quite a few years, Randall
has finally found his match. Fran can hold his own at any table.
After several days of hard hunting, Fran crosses paths with a nice old
Tom that comes strutting in to his calling. Fran makes his shot at a
little over 20 yards completely cutting down a 7/8 inch sapling with
the shot. The bird weighs in at a little over 20 pounds with a long,
heavy beard, but no sign of spurs. Fran apparently enjoyed his visit
as he wants to return again next year to try again.
About a week after Fran returned to Pennsylvania the birds in Sumter
County started gobbling their heads off. << Back

T. L. Forrest
This was his first Mountain Lion hunt. The hunt took place in south
Salt Lake City, with Pine Ridge outfitters.. the hunt was done with
dogs. He was hunting with guide Scott J. Swenson. The cat was shot from
a distance of 20 yards with a Matthews bow. The cat never knew what
hit him, he was dead when he hit the ground. No blood trail to follow,
nothing. They loaded the 120 +/- tom, and head back to camp. They finished
the rest of the day reliving the hunt and feasting on great food. If
more information is needed to hunt contact: Scott I. Swenson, HC 13
- Box 460, Fairview, Utah - 84629. << Back to Top

Bill, Billy & Alex Hoehle
In October 2002, the trio goes to North Dakota to hunt wild ringneck
pheasants. The hunt lasted for one week with most days yielding the
limit of birds. A few mallards were also shot during the week. Billy
is shown with a daily limit of birds for the group. Bill stated that
“It’s a special experience for a father to be afield with his sons.”

Bill & Alex Hoehle
In November 2002, Bill and Alex visited Safaris Iowa, a shooting preserve
for pheasants. Bill and Alex enjoyed three days of hunting while Bill’s
wife and daughter visited and shopped at the near-by Amish community,
The Ammona Colonies. << Back to Top >>
Bill Hoehle
In January 2003, Bill went to Laredo, Texas where he is met by Dr. George
Vogt of Laredo Hunt Club. Dr. Vogt assists in getting across the border
into Mexico with a minimum of hassle. The hunt for trophy whitetail
deer will take place south of the city of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Bill
hunted for 4 days, when on the morning of the second to last day of
the hunt he took his buck. Bill says the biggest problem in hunting
with Dr. Vogt is selecting the right deer to harvest. Many bucks are
sighted each day and the decision needs to be made carefully. Also taken
on the hunt were hogs and coyotes. The hunt was purchased at the 2001
Fundraising Banquet. Dr. Vogt not only is an Alabama Chapter member
and faithful donor to our fundraisers but also a great friend to many
of us. << Back to Top >>
Jordan Jager
As a birthday present for his 10th birthday, Jordan is treated to a
hunt at the Black Creek Hunting Preserve located in Soperton, Georgia.
The hunt takes place in November of 2001 and Jordan is accompanied by
his dad, Steve. Mouflon are first on the list. Jordan is shooting a
.243 caliber rifle and makes two one-shot kills on rams. One is taken
at 100 yards and the other at 20 yards.
Having supposedly fulfilled his birthday promise to Jordan, Steve decides
to take a wild boar. When the opportunity came to take the shot, Steve
allowed Jordan the honor and Jordan took his boar at 15 yards, again
with his .243. The boar weighed in at 325 pounds and was dispatched
with one shot placed right behind his ear. Steve has yet to take a boar.
The hunt was a great experience in spite of dogs barking all night.

Steve Jager
In June 2002 the entire Jager family, Steve, his wife Anna Lisa and
the 3 boys take a two weeks vacation to New Zealand. First stop is Auckland
on the North Island. While on the North Island they visited Volcanoes,
thermal baths and pools and even got to sail on the American Cup Yacht.
Traveling to Wanganui, also on the North Island, they visit Paul and
Maureen Bamber of Wanganui Safaris. Paul and Maureen have come through
with donations for our chapter fundraisers many times in the past. Steve
had purchased one of these hunt donations. According to Steve the accommodations
and food were unsurpassed. We have heard the same from all members that
have hunted with Wanganui Safaris. During the four days with Paul, Steve
took a beautiful silver medal red stag and a wild goat. At night Steve
and the boys hunted possums which are in abundance over there.
Leaving the North Island the group flies to Christchurch on the South
Island. Christchurch is a lovely old English garden city. Three days
are spent enjoying the city and the people. From Christchurch they drive
down to Queenstown to hit the slopes. They snow skied and snow boarded
two different mountains. One mountain was named Remarkable and while
they were there a snowstorm hit and they couldn’t get the car out. They
had to seek other transportation and return later for the vehicle. While
in Queenstown they rented an apartment for 5 nights and got to meet
many new friends.
Steve said this was one of the two best trips they had ever taken and
they definitely intend to return to New Zealand. << Back

Dennis Patterson, Jimmy Burns & Greg
Globetti
September finds the trio 30 miles southwest of Pierre, South Dakota,
hunting pheasant with Carl Matthews. This is a pre-season hunt on land
that is designated as a preserve. Carl has 3000 acres of his own with
access to a total of over 70,000 acres. The beauty part of hunting a
preserve is that there is no limit on birds. The hunters stay in a double
wide mobile home and take their meals with Carl and his family. Carl
furnishes them with a Suburban to drive while they are there. Carl along
with some ranch hands take part in the daily hunts. It is not uncommon
for each hunter to take 8 to 12 birds a day. After they have their fill
of shooting, the hunters ride around looking at deer. << Back

John Rogers
Lakeshore Foundation’s Outdoor Adventure Program provided a hunt for
auction at the 2002 fundraising banquet. The hunt was on their property
in Belamy, Alabama consisting of 2200 acres of pines, swamp bottoms,
hardwoods and green fields. John was high bidder on this hunt and along
with 5 others hunted for 2 days with a great deal of success. In the
two days the six hunters took 1 ten point, 2 eight points, 1 seven point,
1 six point and 1 doe. John’s 10 pointer scored in at 128 5/8 SCI, easily
making the record book for southeastern typical whitetails. John said
it was quite interesting to listen to the stories they were told around
the campfire about their handicap hunts and the volunteers that show
up to help on these hunts. Thanks go out to Wynn Harris and Mike Kelley
along with all the staff of volunteers for a very memorable trip and
wonderful hospitality.Eddie Wergin
This hunt was purchased at the Alabama Chapter fundraiser and taken
in September, 2002. The hunt is with Jan Alsager of Elk Horn Outfitters
in Maidstone, Saskatchewan, Canada. Jan has been a great supporter of
our fundraisers over the years and always provides quality hunts. The
hunt was for 3 days during the peak of the rut. Lots of fighting bulls
were seen and the calling was lots of fun. Eddie’s bull grossed 362
and had just gotten whipped by a big one horned bull with a nice drop
tine. This one horned bull got away with the cows so what’s the use
of living anyway. Eddie said goose hunting was included and there were
thousands of them. They also rode around shooting prairie dogs with
.22 rifles which was loads of fun.
Eddie also purchased an exotic hunt at the banquet and decided to take
his 15 year old nephew along for his first time hunting adventure. The
hunt was for 3 days in Kerrville, Texas. Several ranches were hunted
before filling out their tags on the last day. Eddie’s nephew took a
nice Axis deer and Eddie took a 7 point Axis which is rather rare and
a blackbuck with 17 ¬Ω and 17 6/8 inch horns. Eddie was using a
.300 Weatherby Mag. Also you can see in the photos the extrication of
a free ranging elk stuck in the mud. The real trick was releasing the
elk once he was out of the bog. << Back to Top

Terry Nauert
Terry Nauert hunted mule deer in Wyoming in November. Here’s the large
buck he took on day 4 of a 5-day guided hunt. He hunted on a private
ranch of 19,000 acres near the town of Hulett, Wyoming. The property
is located about 30 miles north of Devils Tower. The buck is a 5x6 with
good mass plus brow tines. The right side top fork has a 3” kicker coming
off it. He was shooting his 300 Weatherby Mag, outfitted with a Zeiss
“V” series 2.5x10x50 scope. His rifle and scope weigh in just shy of
7 3/4 lbs. After taking the buck, Terry ranged the distance at 294 yards,
In Terry’s words, “ The 180 gr. Ballistic tip did its job and the buck
dropped instantly after being hit about halfway up its neck. The deer
were moving all day- everyday as the rut was in full swing.” This was
his third hunt to that area and he plans on going back again. <<

Jean Watson & Jane Capps
Jean Watson (SCI member) and Jane Capps (Capps Taxidermy; Alabama SCI
winning exhibitor last two years) recently spent a week hunting with
Richard Muennink of Action Outdoor Adventures at his ranch in Hondo,
Texas. While there Jane killed two Rio Grande turkeys, a blackbuck,
a watusi, and an angora goat. Jean killed an axis deer and a sika deer
with one shot and an angora goat. The ladies stayed at Richard’s bunkhouse
and enjoyed fellowship with his family. Richard is an excellent guide
and host and they both highly recommend Action Outdoor Adventures (SCI
sponsor and exhibitor).
