Wyoming Mule Deer and Antelope Hunt |
|
|
They were feeding up the ridge at the far end of the hay
field. I took off across....
We left heading to Wyoming for the second year on Oct 13.
The four of us drove straight through to our hunting land
that is two hours North of Laramie. We arrived about 10:30
a.m. local time on Oct 14. We set up camp and headed out
to go hunt antelope. We ended up shooting three antelope
that afternoon.
The next morning we got up at daylight to head back to the
antelope ranch to fill our last tag and the truck wouldn't
crank. We were 90 miles from the closest Ford dealership
but out of pure luck we were able to get them there by 3
p.m. the same day. They had the truck fixed the next day
and we picked it up the next. We did manage to fill that
last antelope tag even though we had truck problems.
Opening day of mule deer season didn't turn out to good
for any of us. None of us saw many deer today. A few small
bucks and some elk but no shooters. The next day was some
better. We saw more deer but fewer bucks. One guy took a
camp meat buck.
I didn't get to hunt today because me and one of the other
guys had to drive to town and pick up the truck.
The fourth morning was different. Mike Helms was taking
Chris Williams down the other end of the property by four-wheeler
and I was waiting on him at the gate in front of the land
owners house. I was glassing the hay field in front of the
house and I spotted a group of 8-10 deer at 3/4 of a mile.
They were feeding up the ridge at the far end of the hay
field. I took off across the hay field hoping there was
a buck in the group. I got with about 750 yards of the group
and I could tell there was a decent buck in the group but
I was unsure how big he was. I stalked to within 400 yards
and got set up. At this time I knew he was a decent 4x4
and because of the lack of buck sightings we had had at
that time I decided to take him. I hit him a little far
back and once I got up on him and I had to put another shot
in him. Once I got to him I then realized that he was better
than I thought. He has 13 scoreable points, 6 on the right
and 7 on the left.
The next morning Chris Williams shot a nice 3x3. The buck
he shot was within mile of where I shot my buck from the
day before. His buck was nearly 20" inside and had long
main beams and back tines. All four of us hunted for Mike
Helms that afternoon and the next day but we couldn't find
him a buck that he liked. He took a very nice 4x4 of this
trip last year and wanted to better the buck he had.
We are all headed back to Wyoming in October and hope to
better what we did this past year.
