Every morning they would turn dogs loose on one or the sites
and hogs would...
The hunt was purchased at the Fundraiser last year on the
silent auction. The hunt description was half price hog
or ram hunt for 2 people in the Smokey Mountains. Wilderness
Hunting Lodge in Monterey, Tennessee, about a 4 hour drive
from Birmingham, donated the hunt. Eddie invited chapter
members Herschel McEwen and Harry Monroe along to share
in the hunt.
There are two lodges which accommodate around 20 people
and three different high fenced sites. Everyone hunts on
their own (no guides). Every morning they would turn dogs
loose on one or the sites and hogs would be running everywhere.
If the hunter sees a hog that he likes he can take him.
The lodge would then send someone out to pick him up, dress
him and cut him up for you.
Eddie was interested in a hog with big tusks. Although
he saw lots of big boars in the 200 to 300 pound range he
didn't see a boar with tusks that appealed to him. Eddie
opted instead to take a Mouflon ram. Harry was only interested
in sheep and took a Corsican ram. Herschel came looking
only for a big boar and tagged out in the first 15 minutes
of the hunt.
The lodge has a wide variety of exotics from water buffalo
to Angora goats, with prices much less than the fenced ranches
in Texas.
