South Texas and Mexico Trophy Whitetail Hunt |

The first week of January I found myself and a couple of
good friends in south Texas deer hunting. Although I didn’t
kill a deer I got some good video of two bucks bigger than
any I’ve taken. One of the guys, Lloyd, did connect on a
225 pound nine point.
Toward the end of the week we picked up another good buddy
at the San Antonio airport, Carson Kimbrough. Alan Estay,
Carson and I were headed to the mountains close to Sabinas,
Mexico to deer hunt. This was to be a trophy hunt and the
first time for us all. We had only three days to hunt. In
such a short time I saw three really good bucks scoring
maybe 135 to 145 SCI.
The only problem was they were three year old bucks. Big
Al saw two Muy Grande bucks but couldn’t get a shot. These
deer have not been pressured and were allowed to mature.
Carson was hunting with the ranch foreman and saw the biggest
buck. They both saw the buck and claimed he was pushing
26 inches wide with 12 or 14 points. Carson had seen several
good bucks but this one really grabbed him. He finished
the hunt in the same stand but no more monster buck. If
the ranch foreman said "Muy Grande" you need to get excited.
He refers to a 20 inch ten point as a "Grande."
By the way, when we first rode around the ranch most of
the feeders were down and torn up. We were told this was
the work of Mexican black bears. One of the guys on the
lease saw two huge black bears last season. There are no
hogs here, just plenty of Javalinas. I’m going to do my
best to return to this ranch.
