Joe’s elk was an 8x8 and mass was what he got...

This past September I traveled to Saskatchewan with members
Joe Wheeler, Gary Smith and Danny Spann. Mike Mirelas of
Sarita, Texas also joined us on the trip. I was guiding
Mike as a return favor for many of the trips he has guided
me on the Kennedy Ranch in south Texas. We flew into Edmon-ton,
Alberta and then drove northeast just across the Saskatch-ewan
border near the town of Pirceland. Ed and Pearl Ansel are
the owners of Beaver Valley Ranch and this was my third
trip and it just gets better every year. Great home cooked
meals with fresh Elk back strap the mainstay.

I always come back a little heaver each trip. The weather was
excellent 50-degree nights and 70s during the day, anything
to get out of the Alabama heat. Gary got things started
by scoring first with a super 10 x 8 scoring 389. One of
the front tines on Gary’s elk was 29 inches.
Joe told me he had mass on his mind for the elk he was looking
for. Joe’s elk was an 8x8 and mass was what he got. Mike
arrowed a super 6x6 on the second afternoon with a spine
shot, incredible to see a twelve hundred pound animal hit
the ground instantly with an arrow. Danny was very patient
and ended the hunt with a great 7X6 with his bow on the
last day. I
stayed for two more groups of hunters and we finished with
nine hunters taking ten elk. I have been on the ranch with
around thirty elk being taken and this year was definitely
the best. I was guiding for six of the hunters, what an
exciting trip.
I don’t plan on missing a September Elk hunt for many years
to come. I returned the week of Thanks-giving and took my
largest whitetail to date a typical 12 scoring 167 gross.
I have already booked the ranch for the month of September
04.
Does anyone want to join me?
