This is about the 7th year this event has been put on and the Alabama Chapter of SCI has been involved every year. This year things are a little different from the way they were previously. In the past a physically challenged individual was pair randomly with a non-disable partner. This year four person teams purchased a sponsorship and a physically challenged partner was drawn to participate with each team. The Alabama Chapter of Safari Club International, Inc. was a Gold Level Sponsor of the event. Our team consisted of David Gray, Bill Whitley, John Rogers and Larry Kirkpatrick. Their physically challenged partner was Steve Bischoff.

On the evening prior to the shoot a reception was held at the Lakeshore facility for sponsors and team participants. Abundant food and beverages were on hand and everyone got a chance to tour and learn about the rehabilitation facility. This is the most advanced facility of its kind in the world. We are fortunate to have it in our area. The staff is top notch and they are all dedicated to their jobs and love what they are doing. During the reception names were drawn to assign partners to the teams.

Breakfast is ready when we arrive early Saturday morning. The participants register and are issued their shells, which are furnished by Remington. Donnie Wood of GSI, Inc. has again made available a beautiful Merkel double barrel shotgun to be raffled off.
Many items have been donated by Remington, Mark’s Outdoor Sports and others to be used for gifts for the shooters and for door prizes.

Mike Kelley along with Wynn Lewis and the Lakeshore staff as well as many volunteers have the situation well in hand. With 12 stations and the 5 stand all being shot at the same time it kept everybody occupied. Lunch was provided by Whiskers and consisted of fresh catfish with all the trimmings. There wasn’t even time for a nap after lunch as everybody was back out on the course. I was able to witness some great shooting and the scores were very close among the top teams. As always, it proved to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience for all concerned.
