SCI IS THE LEADER IN PROTECTING THE FREEDOM TO HUNT
AND IN PROMOTING WILDLIFE CONSERVATION WORLDWIDE.
Being a nonprofit organization with dedication to education,
conservation of wildlife, and the preservation of our hunting
rights, our money goes to these causes. The money to further
these causes comes primarily from our annual fundraising
banquet. Since the first of the year 2000, our chapter has
donated $154,075 to causes we feel are worthwhile. For education,
conservation, and humanitarian services, 81.3% of our money
has been spent in Alabama.
Since the first of 2002, slightly more than 94.7% of this money
has been spent in Alabama. Our trend is to keep more of
our money in the state of Alabama. We are, however, an international
organization, and there are circumstances where our help
is needed in order to further our hunting future in other
parts of the world.
The following is a list of contributions made within the
past year:
Wildlife and Habitat Journal - $670
on January 24, 2003, to place this publication in one library
in each of the 67 counties in Alabama. This is an excellent
source of practical information about managing wildlife.
It presents the best research news alongside how-to articles
written by professional wildlife managers. Each quarterly
issue also features a profile of a private hunting club
providing even more real-life examples of how people manage
wildlife and maintain hunting opportunity.
Lakeshore Foundation - $5,000 in March 2003 for our sponsorship of the annual Sporting Clays Challenge
that was held at Selwood Farms on March 29, 2003. The Alabama
Chapter of SCI had a team of shooters at the event consisting
of David Gray, Bill Whitley, John Rogers, and Larry Kirkpatrick.
Being present at the event, I can assure you that these fellows
represented us very well. I would hate to have to shoot
against them. As always, the event went smoothly, everyone
had a great time, and the food was wonderful. Many door prizes
and raffle items were available. No one went home empty-handed.
Lakeshore Foundation
- $7,500 on April 1, 2003, which represents the proceeds
from two hunt packages offered by the foundation at the
2003 annual fundraising banquet.
Alabama Conservation & Natural
Resources Foundation - $3,054 in April 2003
for completion of the Swan Creek Shooting Range near Athens,
Alabama. This is the second range we have helped to make
possible in the state, the other being the Goodyear Shooting
Range in Etowah County in 2002. It is the goal to have
a public shooting range available in each county of Alabama.
American Wilderness Leadership
School (AWLS) - $2,800 in April 2003 for
tuition for students and teachers we are sending to Granite
Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Conservation Force
- $5,000 on May 5, 2003, to help John and Chrissie Jackson
in their never-ending battle for our hunting rights.
SCI International Headquarters - $10,750
on May 5, 2003, representing 30% of our net profit from the
March 2003 fundraising banquet.
Alabama Cooperative Extension System - $1,752
on May 8, 2003, for airfare for students we are sending to
the AWLS ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Auburn University
- $5,000 on May 20, 2003, as the first installment toward a $25,000
endowment for the Deer Management for the 21st Century program.
This is a pioneering effort in Whitetail Deer research in
a facility unlike any in the world. The 430-acre enclosure
will simulate free-range populations. This will allow studies
in areas heretofore impossible to research.
Christian Sportsmen’s Fellowship
- $1,650 on October 8, 2003, to help sponsor booth space
at a major sports convention.
